It has been a goal of mine for some time to develop a blog based around those things that draw my interest; and those that know me well will know that these things are focussed around business, finance and investing.
These areas of interest were the driving influences that led me to seek out a career as a Professional Financial Adviser after a career of 21 years in the Australian Army working in military & international logistics, strategic planning and management.
I have long been an advocate for easy access to quality financial advice and opinion that is honest, transparent, and which offers a contrarian position to mainstream media. As General George S. Patton said:
“If everyone is thinking alike, then somebody isn't thinking”.
After discussing this concept with a former military colleague of mine, I set myself a goal to finally publish something financial advice related online. So without any fanfare, I created and launched the 'Zero Sum Game' blog; hopefully interesting enough to keep readers coming back and reading future articles and updates...
About Zero Sum Game
In a world evolving rapidly due to changes in technology and the embracing of social media, I think people have lost the skill of thinking strategically, being contrarian to the mainstream, and being able to invest with a true long term mindset. This blog is a place to put forward those positions, as fundamentally, I think knowledge equals wealth when investing in a Zero Sum Game.
“In game theory and economic theory, a zero-sum game is a mathematical representation of a situation in which each participant's gain (or loss) of utility is exactly balanced by the losses (or gains) of the utility of the other participant(s). In the financial markets, options and futures are examples of zero-sum games, excluding transaction costs. For every person who gains on a contract, there is a counter-party who loses.”

This blog aims to be a resource for discussing things that I think matter in Business, Finance & Investing, offering a contrarian perspective for readers, who can think from a strategic perspective with a long term view for the future.
Predominately I write (I think better through the written medium), but I’ll use whatever it takes to get an idea or a point across. If the reader thinks they are involved in a discussion with Denny Crane and Alan Shore while sitting on the balcony enjoying a single malt scotch, then I’ll have achieved my aim in fostering an amicable discussion of contrary opinion.

Long version: I’m a Financial Adviser CFP® Professional and Finance Author based in tropical Townsville, North Queensland, Australia. Originally from a broad acre farming background in Southern New South Wales, I served for 21 years as an Officer in the Australian Army in military & international logistics, strategic planning, and in a variety of leadership and management roles. I have served on operational deployments as a strategic planner in East Timor, Iraq and Afghanistan, and completed an international exchange with the United States Military in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. In my spare time I have also managed to write for investment analysis website ‘Seeking Alpha’.
The experience I have gained from these opportunities provides a unique perspective which helps me simplify complex financial issues for clients. My farming upbringing taught me the value of a dollar, my military service and operational deployments taught me the importance of managing risk, and both reinforce the importance of planning – or as Eisenhower put it:
“Plans are nothing; planning is everything”.
As a Financial Adviser CFP® Professional I work with clients to help them quantify what personal, business, lifestyle and financial goals they wish to achieve. Once these are identified, I work in conjunction with other technical specialists to develop a comprehensive financial strategy that will help clients achieve those goals. Clients range from high salaried professionals, medium to large scale private businesses, large regional agribusiness enterprises, and high net worth individuals and family groups. The opportunity to help clients make their dreams a reality is why I chose to pursue a career in financial services after the military. I chose to settle in Townsville because it has 325 days of ‘fine and sunny’ weather every year, and is a great place to raise a family.
